As Catholics around the world rejoiced at the election of the 267th pope Thursday, May 8, Father Bill Moisant from Resurrection Catholic Church in Stafford expressed similar joy.

In a secretive process known as the Conclave, cardinals from around the world elected Robert Francis Prevost – the first American-born pope – as the successor to Pope Francis. Prevost chose the name of Leo XIV.

“I am very pleased with the election of Pope Leo XIV,” said Moisant. “I think that he will serve well as our new Holy Father and will provide effective moral leadership to the world.”

In particular, Mosaint noted the ability of Pope Leo XIV to serve as a voice for marginalized people across the world.

“The Pope’s many years as a missionary to the people of Peru gives him a special perspective on the needs of the poor and the marginalized,” Moisant said.
